Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul met with the New York Giants for the first time on Tuesday since a July 4 fireworks incident, FOX Sports NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported.

Pierre-Paul, who had his index finger amputated, was not cleared by team doctors, according to Garafolo. If Pierre-Paul signed, the Giants would have put him on the non-football injury list and that would have ended his season.

Pierre-Paul will remain on the team's reserve/franchise list so he won't count against the 53-man roster.

The sixth-year defensive end had 77 tackles, 12.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 16 games last season.
