Salzburg, Austria (SportsNetwork.com) - Three-time Olympic ski jump champion Thomas Morgenstern announced his retirement Friday.

Morgenstern helped Austria win silver in the team event at the Sochi Games.

The 27-year-old Morgenstern struggled after suffering a cranial injury and lung contusion in a training accident at the start of the year.

"I have reached my athletic goals and realized my dreams," said Morgenstern on his official website. "With my last jump I got a silver medal with the team in Sochi. For me the time has come to complete this chapter."

Morgenstern was the individual large hill champion at the 2006 Torino Games and also captured gold that year as part of the team event. He was also a member of Austria's gold-medal team effort at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
