Siena has fired basketball coach Mitch Buonaguro after three years following a 24-loss season that tied the school's record for futility.

Buonaguro went 35-59 with the Saints, never finishing a season with a winning record or in the top half of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Saints had been to the NCAA tournament in each of the three previous years before Buonaguro was promoted to head coach.

Siena athletic director John D'Argenio said Tuesday a national search for Buonaguro's successor has started.

Buonaguro was Fran McCaffery's lead assistant at Siena from 2005-10. During that stretch the Saints won three straight MAAC titles and earned the league's automatic NCAA tournament berths.

Buonaguro says he leaves "knowing I gave my all every day."
