Bernd Schuster was named the manager of Malaga on Friday to replace the outgoing Manuel Pellegrini.

Schuster joins Malaga on a five-year contract after his last managerial job came with Turkish side Besiktas, which he left in March 2011 after less than a year.

The German has experience as a manager in Spain as well as having guided Real Madrid to the league title in 2007-08.

Pellegrini led Malaga to a sixth-place finish in La Liga last season, but the club will not be able to compete in the Europa League next year because of a European ban handed out by UEFA stemming from failed payments to fellow clubs and Spanish tax authorities.

Manchester City will be the next stop for Pellegrini, who has managed in Spain since 2004 with both Villarreal and Real Madrid prior to his landing at Malaga.
