PSV Eindhoven confirmed on Monday that the club has fired manager Fred Rutten following a run of three successive defeats.

Sunday's 3-1 loss to NAC came after a 4-2 defeat against Valencia in the Europa League and a 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Twente.

Former PSV player Phillip Cocu will take charge of the team for the rest of the season along with Ernest Faber.

Rutten arrived at PSV in 2009 from Schalke and led the club to successive third-place finishes in his first two seasons.

Despite the poor run of form, Rutten leaves PSV just four points from the top of the league.
