Tuesday night's Game 1 of the World Series was perhaps overwhelmed by news that the father of Kansas City Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez passed away before the game.
Volquez, who threw six quality innings for the Royals against the New York Mets, may or may not have known ahead of time that his father had died (it's unclear whether he knew until after the game, according to Ken Rosenthal).
Regardless of any timeline confusion, Volquez left Kauffman Stadium after his start and well before the game was over, and has since returned to the Dominican Republic with his family - as Rosenthal reported on Twitter on Wednesday:
This has been an especially tough few months for the Royals in terms of parents passing away, as Volquez joins Chris Young (who threw three stellar bullpen innings on Tuesday and wound up the winning pitcher) and Mike Moustakas as Royals that have lost parents since August.
As for the FOX broadcast's decision not to report on Volquez's situation until he left the game on Tuesday, Rosenthal shared an article written by Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post providing insight about it:
Volquez is expected to return to the Royals by Game 3 on Friday night in New York and, as the Royals announced on Wednesday, Young and Volquez are slated to start Games 4 and 5, respectively:
