The Kansas City Royals and veteran first baseman Carlos Pena agreed to terms on a minor league contract Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Pena batted .209 with eight homers and 25 RBI over 85 games with Houston before being designated for assignment in July.

Pena is a career .233 hitter and has clubbed 285 homers in 1,471 major league games with Texas, Oakland, Detroit, Boston, Tampa Bay, the Chicago Cubs and Astros.

The Royals also completed a minor league trade, acquiring pitcher Clayton Mortensen from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Quintin Berry.
