The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Justin Maxwell from the Houston Astros Wednesday for pitcher Kyle Smith.

The injury-riddled Maxwell is hitting .241 with two homers and eight RBI in 40 games this season. The 29-year-old missed nearly two months after suffering a fractured left hand in April and then missed more time due to a mild concussion after diving for a fly ball during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 26.

Maxwell batted .229 with 18 homers and 53 RBI in 124 games for Houston a year ago.

The 20-year-old Smith started 19 games for High-A Wilmington and went 5-4 with a 2.85 ERA over 104 1/3 innings pitched.
