Madrid, Spain – Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new five-year contract with Real Madrid, stating that he could stay at the club for the remainder of his career.
According to reports the deal will pay Ronaldo a yearly salary of $22.5 million, eclipsing the contract of Barcelona's Lionel Messi to make him the highest paid player in La Liga.
The 28-year-old had two years remaining on his previous deal, and he was linked with a move away from Madrid this summer before signing the new contract.
"I'm really happy here. I'll be here five more years, and I just want to win trophies for this club," Ronaldo said after signing his new deal. "I appreciate that the fans like me a lot. I'm happy, I want to give my best on the pitch.
"I will be honest with you - everyone knows I was in Manchester for six years, but Manchester is in the past. Now my club is Real Madrid. This is my home, my family is here and I'm really happy here."
Ronaldo scored in Madrid's 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Saturday, giving him two goals in the team's first four games this term.
