Bucharest, Romania – Former top-10 star Tommy Robredo came up round loser Monday at the $510,000 Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis event.
Rising 23-year-old Brazilian Joao Souza took out the fifth-seeded Robredo, who was seeing his first action since late July, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in just over two hours on the red clay at BNR Arenas.
One other Day-1 result saw Portugal's Frederico Gil overcome France's Jeremy Chardy 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
This week's top seeds are reigning champion Juan Ignacio Chela and German Florian Mayer, both of who received opening-round bye. The Argentine Chela beat Spaniard Pablo Andujar in last year's Bucharest finale.
The 2011 champion here will earn $93,000.
