Nadal, Federer advance in Monte Carlo

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Eight-time champion Rafael Nadal and three-time runner-up Roger Federer were a pair of easy second-round winners Wednesday at the $4 million Monte Carlo Masters tennis event.The top-seeded Nadal blew past Russian qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-1, while the fourth-seeded former world No. 1 Federer drilled Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-2 on the red clay at the beautiful Monte Carlo Country Club."I'm a bit surprised how well it went," the 32-year-old Federer said after blitzing Stepanek.Federer lost to Nadal in three straight finals here from 2007-08.Nadal lost to Novak Djokovic in last year's final, ending his record eight- year reign at this event.
