Rennes, France (SportsNetwork.com) - A goal from Emmanuel Riviere in the 55th minute gave Monaco a 1-0 win at Rennes on Saturday that keeps the club alive in the Ligue 1 title race.
Monaco is still 10 points back of leaders PSG, but the win means that the capital club is unable to clinch the league title on Sunday with a win.
Rennes remains eight points clear of the relegation zone with five games to play.
Joao Moutinho was a threat for Monaco as he just missed scoring in the 14th minute with a shot that sailed over the crossbar while he set up a chance for Riviere that was denied by Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil.
Monaco was asking most of the questions and the visitors finally unlocked the Rennes defense in the 55th minute with a nice ball from Jeremy Toulalan that allowed Riviere to slot his shot past Costil.
That final score could have been worse, but Costil kept his team within a goal by producing impressive saves on both Riviere and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
Lille strengthened its hold on third place by topping Valenciennes, 1-0, through a 70th-minute goal from Divock Origi, moving the club eight points clear of fourth-place St Etienne.
Last-place Ajaccio earned a point against Bordeaux as Mehdi Mostefa scored in the 85th minute for Ajaccio in a 1-1 draw, Evian topped Bastia, 2-1, behind goals from Nicolas Benezet and Daniel Wass, Vincent Aboubakar scored in stoppage time to lift Lorient to a 2-1 win over Nice, while Sochaux got goals from Jordan Ayew and Roy Contout in a 2-0 triumph against Toulouse.
