Red Sox rained out in Bronx, but increase lead on Rays

The Red Sox had their game against the champion New York Yankees postponed due to rain Friday night, but Boston was able to inch closer to a playoff spot.

Losers in seven of their last nine games, the Red Sox caught a break when the Rays were beaten, 5-1, at home by Toronto. The result increased Boston's lead to 2 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay for the wild card spot with just six contests left for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox and Yankees will make up Friday's washout as part of a doubleheader on Sunday with game times of 1:05 p.m. (et) and 6:30 p.m. (et).

Lefty Jon Lester (15-8) was bumped from Friday to start Saturday's game for the Red Sox. Tim Wakefield (7-7) and John Lackey (12-12) will pitch in Sunday's doubleheader.

Freddy Garcia (11-8), who was scheduled to start Friday for the Yankees, will go on Saturday. A.J. Burnett (10-11) and Ivan Nova (16-4) will take the mound Sunday.
