Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final could not have gone any better for the Los Angeles Kings. In their first appearance in the Final, the Kings rode two power-play goals from Luc Robitaille and jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the series thanks to a 4-1 win in Montreal. But three consecutive overtime wins that included a dramatic Game-2 stick measurement that led to a Marty McSorley penalty and the Canadiens' tying goal gave Montreal plenty of momentum heading into Game 5.

McSorley would make some amends for his stick-related infraction in Game 2 by tying Game 5 1-1 early in the second period. But Montreal responded swiftly, with Kirk Muller scoring just 71 seconds later and Stephan Lebeau padding the lead later in the period. Stout goaltending from Patrick Roy would seal a 4-1 Cup-clinching victory for Montreal, earning him his second Conn Smythe Trophy. The victory would be the Canadiens' 24th Cup all time and would be the last Stanley Cup Final to feature either Wayne Gretzky or the Montreal Forum.
