Carlsbad, CA – Poland's Urszula Radwanska upset sixth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round of the $740,000 Mercury Insurance Open tennis event.
The 21-year-old Radwanska, who is making her main draw debut at this tournament, fired six aces to defeat the 32nd-ranked player in the world.
Also on Day 1, qualifier Alexa Glatch doused wild card fellow American Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-2; Varvara Lepchenko downed Nicole Gibbs, 6-3, 6-1; and Japan's Misaki Doi rallied to top Portugal's Michelle Larcher de Brito, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-3.
This week's top seed is former Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli of France.
The newest Wimbledon runner-up, Agnieszka Radwanska, the older sister of Urszula, beat 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Vera Zvonareva in last year's Carlsbad finale. Agnieszka Radwanska, who was also a Carlsbad runner-up in 2010, is not defending her title this week.
The 2012 Carlsbad champ will claim $96,000.
