Quarterback Joel Stave is out indefinitely with an injured right shoulder, leaving Tanner McEvoy as the unquestioned starter for No. 18 Wisconsin.

Coach Gary Andersen said Tuesday Stave needs to rest. He has been dealing with the injury for a couple of weeks, and there is no timetable for his return.

Stave was the starter in 2013, when Wisconsin finished 9-4. He had an inconsistent season and hurt his right shoulder in the Capital One Bowl in January. The injury limited Stave during spring drills, and he lost the starting job to McEvoy after a preseason competition.

In a season-opening loss last week to LSU, McEvoy ran for 40 yards, but was 8-of-24 passing for 50 yards and two interceptions.
