Kevin Strootman opened the scoring after 14 minutes before Dries Mertens tallied his league-leading 12th goal of the campaign on the half-hour mark.

Zakaria Labyad stretched the lead to 3-0 at halftime, while it took just a few minutes after the restart for Georgino Wijnaldum to add to the advantage.

Groningen pulled a goal back one minute later through Nicklas Pedersen, but Tim Matavz and Ola Toivonen each scored for PSV to close out the emphatic win, which leaves the club three points back of leaders AZ Alkmaar in second place.

Heerenveen remains in fourth after a 2-2 draw with NAC that saw Darryl Janmaat net the equalizer in the second half for Heerenveen, Mads Junker scored twice as Roda grabbed a 3-1 win over Heracles and De Graafschap moved to within one point of safety by claiming a 2-1 triumph at Venlo as Yuri Rose tallied the winning goal in the 86th minute.
