PSV goes top with RKC Waalwijk defeat

PSV Eindhoven climbed to first place in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday, claiming a 2-0 win over RKC Waalwijk at the Philips Stadion.

The goals came on opposite sides of halftime as Dries Mertens converted a penalty kick six minutes into the match while Georgino Wijnaldum doubled the advantage in the 69th minute.

The win sees PSV climb to 56 points on the season, bringing the club two points clear of Ajax at the top of the table. The Amsterdam club will have the chance to return to the Eredivisie summit with maximum points over AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.

RKC Waalwijk has lost two league contests in a row to stay one point clear of the relegation zone with 26 points.

Vitesse went level with Ajax on 54 points on Saturday, grabbing a 4-0 win over Den Haag. Wilfried scored twice in the first half to bring his season tally in Eredivisie play to 26 goals while Marco van Ginkel and Mike Havenaar added a two more for Vitesse in the second half.

Also on Saturday, Everton and Mike te Wierik scored six minutes apart in the second half to help Heracles to a 2-0 defeat of Venlo while Heerenveen overturned a one-goal deficit to claim a 3-1 victory over NEC Nijmegen.
