Erfurt, Germany – Russian Alexander Povetkin bested Uzbekistan's Ruslan Chagaev by unanimous decision to earn the WBA "regular" heavyweight crown on Saturday night at Messehall.
Povetkin (22-0) withstood a middle-round challenge from Chagaev (27-2-1), but worked his foe into submission in the later rounds of the bout. He walked away victorious thanks to 117-113, 117-113 and 116-112 scorecards.
The 31-year-old Povetkin has won each of his last two fights by decision, while his 32-year-old counterpart dropped his first decision since losing to "super" heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko in June of 2009.
