NEW YORK (Reuters) - The NBA fined Portland Trail Blazers swingman Rudy Fernandez $25,000 on Thursday for public statements considered detrimental to the league after local media quoted his agent as saying he wanted a release from his contract.

Fernandez, a first round pick of the Phoenix Suns in the 2007 NBA Draft, averaged 8.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2 assists last season with Portland, off slightly from his rookie campaign when he averaged 10.4 points.

The league said in a short statement that the fine was related to the Spaniard's desire to be traded or released by the Trail Blazers with two years remaining on his contract.
