PHOENIX (AP) Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock, out for the season with a broken right elbow, said Saturday he didn't think his initial injury was ''a major thing'' before fracturing the elbow on a headfirst slide in spring training.

Pollock dealt with elbow discomfort in spring training, and an X-ray revealed that a screw had broken in his elbow from a surgery in 2010. The decision was made for Pollock to play through it, but in his first game back, he broke the elbow sliding into home.

''I almost thought it was a joke we were doing an X-ray. I never thought this was a major thing,'' Pollock said. ''That was kind of a shock to me. I didn't feel anything. We talked about if something were to happen this is what we'd do. And the plan was to just play it out and we're probably not going to have to worry about it.''

Pollock will have to wait at least three months before resuming baseball activities and it could be a full season until he is back on the field, Diamondbacks orthopaedic hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan said Saturday.

''It's what I've known for a while now,'' Pollock said.

Pollock had a three-hour surgery last Tuesday. He has a metal plate and screws holding his elbow bone together.

''This hardware's a lot more in-depth than the last one I had,'' Pollock said.
