Pitt quarterback Tom Savage parlays long journey into starring role with Panthers
PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh quarterback Tom Savage's nomadic collegiate career is flourishing with the Panthers.
Savage tied an ACC record by throwing for six touchdowns in a 58-55 win over Duke last week. His 424 yards passing were the fourth-highest total in school history. It's heady territory for a player who didn't play in 2011 or 2012.
Savage started as a freshman at Rutgers in 2009 and helped the Scarlet Knights to a 9-4 record and a 45-24 victory over UCF in the St. Petersburg Bowl.
Savage's playing time decreased as a sophomore and he transferred to Arizona. He only stayed a year after the Wildcats underwent a coaching change and moved on to Pitt last fall.
The 23-year-old Savage joked he feels his age sometimes around the team's freshmen, but is happy to be back in the game.
