Phillies activate Utley from DL

The Philadelphia Phillies activated second baseman Chase Utley from the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Utley was placed on the disabled list on May 21 due to a strained right oblique.

The 34-year-old second baseman hit .272 with seven home runs and 25 RBI in 44 games before his injury.

Utley, a five-time All Star, has struggled to stay on the field in recent seasons. He has not played more than 115 games in any season since the Phillies appeared in the 2009 World Series.

For his career, Utley has a .287 batting average, 206 home runs, and 764 RBI in 11 seasons. He also has a .375 on-base percentage and .499 slugging percentage.

In a two-game rehab assignment at Double-A Reading, Utley went 0-for-9.

To make room for Utley, the Phillies optioned infielder Michael Martinez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Martinez has played in six games for Philadelphia this year.
