Rome, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Diego Perotti's first-half penalty kick held up as the winner on Monday as Genoa came away with a much-needed 1-0 win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

The win for Genoa puts an end to a run of seven straight matches in league play without a win and improves the team to sixth place in the table with 32 points, three behind Sampdoria for the final Europa League qualification spot.

It was a tight affair for the first 20-plus minutes, but things became more interesting on 27 minutes when Mbaye Niang got in behind the Lazio defense and was clattered down in the penalty area by a diving Federico Marchetti.

The play resulted straight red card for Marchetti and a penalty for Genoa, which was converted with ease by Perotti, who calmly fired into the bottom right corner.

Lazio sent numbers forward in the second half in search of an equalizer, but it never materialized and the visitors escaped with all three points.
