Orioles sign infielder Atkins to one-year contract

Toronto, Canada – BALTIMORE (Reuters) - The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran infielder Garrett Atkins to a one-year contract, the team said on Tuesday.

Atkins, 30, is a .298 hitter over seven major league campaigns with the Colorado Rockies. He hit .226 with nine home runs and 48 RBI last season.

Financial terms were not disclosed but the Baltimore Sun reported the contract to be worth $4 million. Atkins is expected to start at third base in 2010.
