DALLAS (Reuters) - Oakland Athletics pitcher Ben Sheets has been ruled out for the rest of the season because of a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow, the team said Wednesday.
Sheets, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, missed the entire 2009 season after having surgery on his right elbow.
"He'll be missed both on the field and off the field," Oakland manager Bob Geren told the team's website (http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com). "He's been a great team mate for a lot of the young guys.
"A lot of them looked up to him for his competitiveness and, off the field, he was just a pleasant guy to be around."
The 32-year-old former All-Star had lasted six or more innings in his past 14 starts.
