Nurnberg won its third straight and extended its unbeaten streak to four games as it climbed into the top half of the table in ninth place. Gladbach lost the second spot last week, but would have reclaimed the place with a win.
Monchengladbach remained third, one point behind Bayern Munich, which lost 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
With the match scoreless in the closing minutes, Bunjaku accepted a pass from Alexander Esswein and drove a left-footed shot into the middle of the net with just 3 minutes remaining in normal time.
Nurnberg was near the bottom of the table just weeks ago, but 10 points in its last four matches has lifted the club well clear of the relegation zone.
Gladbach is winless in two and three of its last five, but still comfortably in the top four. Schalke is three points back in fourth, with Leverkusen seven points off the pace in fifth.
Hoffenheim 1, Cologne 1
Sinsheim, Germany - Lukas Podolski scored in the 81st minute as Cologne ended a three-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim at Rhein-Neckar Arena on Sunday in the Bundesliga.
Cologne had scored just one goal in its last three games, but Podolski notched his 16th goal of the season to slow the club's free fall. Cologne sits in 14th place, just three points above the drop zone.
Marvin Compper staked Hoffenheim to the lead in the 33rd minute, but the hosts settled for their fourth draw during a five-game undefeated streak. Hoffenheim is 10th, and only seven points clear of the drop.
