(STATS) - Norfolk State's 2011 MEAC football championship has been vacated as part of the NCAA sanctions lobbied against the university for inaccurate reporting of some student-athletes' eligibility, the NCAA and the school announced Thursday.
The athletic department has been placed on two years' probation for violations in football, men's and women's track, men's and women's tennis, women's volleyball, baseball, bowling and softball.
The inaccuracy of 19 football players cost Norfolk State its wins in 2009 (seven), 2010 (six) and 2011 (nine). Overall, 97 wins in six of the sports were vacated because of the violations.
The historically black institution also will pay a $5,000 self-imposed fine.
The penalties were found during Norfolk State's 2012 annual review of how athletes receive admission, financial aid and certification of eligibility. All NCAA schools go through the process.
"We were very proactive in addressing the situation," athletic director Marty Miller told the Virginian-Pilot. "The NCAA "felt we were very honest. We weren't hiding anything.
"It was just an error."
