Anatoly Bose and Fred Hunter each scored 22 points and Nicholls State defeated Lamar 78-71 Saturday.

Hunter scored on a layup with 15:57 to play, giving the Colonels (10-8, 4-3 Southland Conference) their biggest lead, 43-28, in a matchup between the conference's highest-scoring team (Lamar) and its second best-defending team (Nicholls State).

The Cardinals closed to within 56-55 with 5:09 left on Anthony Miles' layup. Bose answered with a three-point play and a 3-pointer to restore the lead to seven with 4:24 remaining. The Cardinals (9-11, 3-3) got no closer than three after that.

The Cardinals were held to 17 points below their 87.2-point average, but scored 10 more than the 60.1 the Colonels were accustomed to surrendering. Hunter surpassed the career 1,000-point milestone.

Kendrick Harris had 19 points while Devon Lamb added 16 points and 11 rebounds for Lamar.
