Niang nets brace as Genoa rolls past Hellas Verona

Genoa, Italy ( - Mbaye Niang scored on either side of the intermission on Sunday as Genoa rolled to a 5-2 thrashing of Hellas Verona at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris.

Genoa entered the clashing flying high after an impressive 1-0 win over Lazio last time out and the hosts opened the scoring with a little bit of good fortune in the 10th minute via an own goal from Hellas Verona's Alessandro Agostini.

Three minutes later Niang doubled the lead, but Luca Toni pulled one back for Hellas in the 20th minute.

Niang completed his double on the half-hour mark to make it 3-1, but Toni fired home his second of the day just prior to the hour mark to make it 3-2 with all to play for over the final half hour.

Genoa then seized firm control of the match as Andrea Bertolacci scored in the 66th minute to make it 4-2 and Diego Perotti, who netted the winner against Lazio, added an insurance tally with four minutes to play.

The victory moves Genoa to 35 points from 23 matches, good for sixth place in Serie A, two points behind Lazio for the final Europa League qualification spot.

Also in Italy's top flight on Sunday, Mattia Destro and Massimo Maccarone traded goals as 10-man AC Milan held on for a point in a 1-1 draw with Empoli, while Fredy Guarin scored a brace to go with goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and Rodrigo Palacio as Inter Milan smashed Atalanta, 4-1, at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

Godfred Donsah and Omar El Kaddouri swapped goals as Torino and Cagliari played to a 1-1 draw, while Antonio Candreva's 23rd-minute penalty handed all three points to Lazio in a 1-0 win over Udinese.

Mariano Julio Izco and Riccardo Meggiorini scored for Chievo Verona in a 2-1 win over Sampdoria, while Roma and Parma played to a scoreless draw.

In Sunday's final fixture, defending champions Juventus were held to a 2-2 draw against Cesena thanks to a 70th-minute equalizer from Franco Brienza.
