LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst has released a letter to Cornhuskers football fans thanking them for their support and expressing confidence ''the future is bright'' under first-year coach Mike Riley.

Eichorst says that while the team's 3-6 record is disappointing, he's impressed by what he sees behind the scenes.

Eichorst said ''though the consistent victories are not there yet, I am confident they will come. I have witnessed how our young men battle every day in practice and fight to the finish on game days in the face of great adversity.''

Nebraska lost 55-45 at Purdue on Saturday and plays No. 6 Michigan State this week.

Riley replaced Bo Pelini, who won at least nine games each of his seven years at Nebraska.
