CINCINNATI (AP) The Washington Nationals put first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on paternity leave before the start of their series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
Infielder Trea Turner was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to fill in. The 22-year-old Turner is a top prospect who made his major league debut last season, hitting .225 in 40 at-bats. He is leading the International League in runs and steals, and ranks second with 61 hits.
Zimmerman is batting .250 with 11 doubles, eight homers and 26 RBIs in 48 games. His wife, Heather, had the couple's second child on Thursday.
The Nationals led the NL East heading into their three-game series against the Reds, who are last in the NL Central.
