Nadal advances in Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ( - Top seed Rafael Nadal was among Tuesday's first-round winners at the $1.55 million Rio Open tennis event.

Nadal, the reigning champion, had no problems in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.

Second-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer also advanced with an easy 6-4, 6-3 win over countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Fourth-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini rallied after dropping the first set to take down Czech Jiri Vesely 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1. Sixth-seeded Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas also had to overcome a first-set loss in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Eighth-seeded Slovakian Martin Klizan advanced with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win against Dusan Lajovic of Serbia.

There were several retirements in this tournament on Tuesday, with fifth- seeded Argentinean Leonardo Mayer bowing out while down in the third set to unseeded Slovakian Blaz Roza.

Juan Monaco also moved on thanks to a retirement, advancing to the second round after seventh-seeded Colombian Santiago Giraldo stepped off the court while down in the second set.

An unseeded matchup also saw a player drop out, as Argentina's Federico Delbonis won thanks to compatriot Diego Schwartzman retiring early in the third set.

Unseeded winners on Tuesday included Joao Souza, Pablo Andujar, Pablo Carreno Busta and Albert Montanes.

The 2015 champ will pocket $343,000.
