AC Milan acquired midfielder Alberto Aquilani long loan from Liverpool on Thursday.

Aquilani, 27, will have to complete a medical to seal the move back to Italy, where the Italian international spent last season on loan with Juventus. He started his career in Italy with Roma before joining Liverpool in 2009.

"Throughout the entire process, his only desire has been to play football and he has put this ahead of any other considerations and at personal cost to himself," Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli said. "We wish him well for the season ahead."

Capped 17 times for Italy, Aquilani never round a niche with Liverpool and can seal a permanent switch to Milan at the end of the upcoming Serie A season.

Roma is scheduled to open Sunday at Bologna, but the start of the season could be delayed due to a possible strike.
