DENVER (AP) Mets ace Matt Harvey is going to skip his next scheduled start, a planned move by New York in order to help limit the right-hander's innings in his first season back from Tommy John surgery.
Mets manager Terry Collins said Harvey will not pitch Sunday at Colorado. Right-handed reliever Logan Verrett (0-1) instead will get the ball.
''We are going to hold him back. This is a one time thing,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said Friday before New York played the Rockies. ''We considered times in September, but the time was now.''
Harvey is 11-7 with a 2.57 ERA after missing last season while recovering from elbow surgery in October 2013. He has thrown 154 innings this season.
Collins said the Mets had long planned to give a break to Harvey, adding the team's ace was on board with the idea for the brief letup in his workload as NL East-leading New York gears up for its closing run.
Verrett, recalled for a second stint with New York earlier this week, has allowed one run in 13 1-3 innings with 12 strikeouts in seven games.
