Birmingham, England – Aston Villa announced on Monday that the club has fired manager Alex McLeish after one season on the job.
McLeish was not a popular choice with the Villa fans when he was hired by the club last summer after being relegated with rivals Birmingham.
And now after a season at Villa Park that saw the Villains finish just two points above the relegation zone in 16th place, McLeish has been fired.
"Aston Villa can confirm that Alex McLeish's contract has been terminated with immediate effect," read a statement on the club's official website. "The club has been disappointed with this season's results, performances and the general message these have sent to our fans.
"The board wishes to assure supporters that we are conscious in every sense that Villa expects and deserves more and we will strive to deliver this."
Villa closed the season with a 2-0 defeat against Norwich City on Sunday, extending the club's winless streak to 10 games to end the campaign.
The last win that Villa had under McLeish came on March 10 against Fulham, while the club finished with the worst home record in its history after winning just four times in 19 home matches in league play.
