Lyon signed goalkeeper Matthieu Valverde on a deal through the end of the current season Tuesday, as the club acquired cover for injured duo Anthony Lopes and Remy Vercoutre.

Valverde, 28, joins the seven-time French champions on an eight-month contract and will back up No. 1 goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Vercoutre suffered a ruptured tendon in his right foot, and Lopes is also out. Valverde played for Bordeaux in 2009 when it won Ligue 1, and last played for Toulouse. He was a free agent after leaving Toulouse this summer.

Lyon hosts Real Madrid in Champions League play Wednesday.
