CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Chris Lum, Lehigh, Senior, 6-2, 205, QB, Lake Orion, MI
Lum may have spent much of the fourth quarter on the bench during the Mountain Hawks' 49-24 win against Monmouth, but the senior's first three quarters were outstanding. Completing 22 of his 34 passes for 346 yards, Lum connected for four touchdowns and led six scoring drives. It was Lum's third career 300-yard game and the four touchdown passes, which traveled 73, 32, 23 and 24 yards, were a career high.
Dominique Williams, Wagner, Junior, 5-9, 200, Bridgeton, NJ
After missing the 2010 season with a knee injury, Williams shook off any rust from the time off and rushed for a career-high 180 yards on 26 carries in a 38-28 win against St. Francis (Pa.). Striking late in each half, Williams had touchdown runs of 5 and 28 yards, while showing flashes of brilliance he displayed when he rushed for more than 100 yards four times as a freshman in 2009.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cooper Taylor, Richmond, R-Junior, 6-5, 220, S, Atlanta, GA
The Spiders knew they were getting a big-time player when Taylor transferred from Georgia Tech and the safety impressed in his Richmond debut, helping anchor a defense that upset Duke, 23-21. Collecting a game-high 14 tackles, Taylor set up the Spiders' first touchdown when he jarred the ball loose from Duke quarterback Sean Renfree and Richmond recovered the fumble at the Blue Devils' 8-yard line. Three plays later, the Spiders were in the end zone. Taylor, a second-team All-ACC selection as a freshman in 2009, missed much of the last two seasons due to injury and showed no signs of lingering effects in his Spiders debut.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Trevor Coston, Maine, R-Senior, 5-10, 210, DB/PR, Greenlawn, NY
As a junior, Coston returned 20 punts for 149 yards. The Maine defensive back nearly reached that mark in one game as he helped lead the Black Bears to a 28-13, season-opening victory against Bryant. On his first return, Coston took the ball back 30 yards to the Bryant 26-yard line, setting up Maine's second touchdown. However, his next return was even better, as he weaved his way for a 74-yard touchdown return - the only FCS player in Week 1 to return a punt or kickoff for a score. Overall, Coston returned five punts for 130 yards, an average of 26 yards per punt. Coston also added a pair of interceptions, including a game-sealing pick he returned to the Bryant 3-yard line.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Xavian Johnson, Weber State, R-Freshman, 6-0, 180, WR, Las Vegas, NV
Johnson almost had one of the biggest catches of the season for the Wildcats, as he hauled in a 49-yard, go-ahead touchdown with 12:18 left against Wyoming. However, Wyoming struck with 22 seconds remaining, to negate Weber State's upset attempt. Despite the loss, Johnson emerged as a reliable receiver, grabbing seven passes for 118 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
