A six-run eruption in the sixth inning allowed the second-seed Cal Poly Mustangs to run away with a 9-2 victory over the third-seed San Diego Toreros in the first game of the Los Angeles Regional.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning the Mustangs (40-17) would bat around in the inning while getting two-run singles from both Brian Mundell and Jimmy Allen. Mundell went 2-for-4 with four total RBI in the contest while Allen was 4-for-5 with two runs driven in. Joey Wagman didn't need much offensive support as he allowed just a single earned run over eight innings to pick up the win.

P.J. Conlon let up seven runs, six of which were earned, and didn't make it out of the sixth inning as he was handed the loss for San Diego (35-23). Connor Joe and Austin Green each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the nightcap Adam Plutko pitched a strong seven innings as he powered the top-seed UCLA Bruins to a 5-3 win over the fourth-seed San Diego State Aztecs.

Plutko lasted seven innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on six hits while striking out four to pick up the win. David Berg had a shaky ninth inning, allowing a run on two hits, but struck out the side to get the save. Pat Gallagher went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Bruins (40-17) offensively.

Jake Romanski went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and Greg Allen went 3- for-5 with a double, a triple and an RBI for San Diego State (31-30) but the pitching wasn't good enough. Ryan Doran got the start and allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.

On Saturday San Diego and San Diego State will meet up in the loser's bracket while UCLA and Cal Poly will play later in the day in the winner's bracket.
