James Ennis scored 19 points and Long Beach State won its season opener on Saturday, defeating North Alabama 75-65.

Ennis, the lone returning starter from last year's Big West Conference champions, was 6 of 10 from the field and added six rebounds. Reserves Kris Gulley and Deng Deng scored 11 points apiece, with Gulley and Dan Jennings grabbing a team-high seven rebounds for the 49ers.

Rashaun Claiborne scored 17 points to lead the Lions, a Division II team. Wes Long had 13 points, Bruce Adams scored 10 and Lonnie Smith had a game-high 10 rebounds for North Alabama.

It was the first meeting between the schools.
