ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley says the team informed him this offseason that it was not picking up the 2015 option in his contract.
Fairley told reporters Tuesday he considered the decision a win-win deal after being initially surprised.
Detroit drafted Fairley out of Auburn with the No. 13 overall pick in 2011 and he has struggled to sustain success in part because of his fluctuating weight.
Fairley acknowledged he played too heavy last season while weighing as much as 320 pounds. He says he has lost about 30 pounds because he stopped eating fast food three days a week and has been working out regularly. Fairley is also feeling better after having surgery last month to treat his sleep apnea.
