MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) Liberia goalkeeper Nathaniel Sherman's career is in doubt after he suffered a serious eye injury walking into a glass panel at the team hotel ahead of an African Cup qualifier this month.

Sherman told The Associated Press that the freak accident caused the glass to shatter, damaging the retina of his right eye. He said he currently cannot see out of the eye, but hopes to recover after traveling to India for surgery.

''There's a possibility that I can get back on the pitch but right now I cannot say anything in my present condition,'' he said.

Sherman returned to Liberia last week to begin his recovery following an 11-day trip to Delhi for treatment.

The accident in the hotel lobby ruled the 24-year-old Sherman out of Liberia's surprise 1-0 victory over Tunisia in African Cup of Nations qualifying in Monrovia days later on Sept. 5.

That was Liberia's first international at home in a year because of the Ebola outbreak.
