SYDNEY (AP) Former Feyenoord and Ajax midfielder Leonardo has agreed to join Newcastle in Australian football's A-League on a one-year contract.

Head coach Scott Miller said Newcastle is ''excited to have a player of Leonardo's experience and class joining our club'', and expects he ''will add craft and spark to our team.''

Brazil-born Leonardo Vitor Santiago was a member of the Feyenoord team that won the 2002 UEFA Cup and also played two seasons at Ajax and four at NAC Breda in the Dutch Eredivisie. He won the Austrian Bundesliga with Red Bull Salzburg in 2012, and had been without a club since leaving German club 1860 Munich midway through the last European season.

The 32-year-old Leonardo will join Newcastle in mid-September, in time for the new A-League season.
