Newport Beach, CA – Bernhard Langer birdied the final hole Friday to grab a share of the lead after the first round of the Toshiba Classic.
Langer, the 2008 champion, carded a six-under 65 and he was joined in the lead at Newport Beach Country Club by Olin Browne and Bobby Clampett.
Tom Kite posted a five-under 66 and was joined in fourth place by Steve Pate, Bill Glasson, David Eger, Loren Roberts and Tom Kite.
Fred Couples, Mark Calcavecchia and CBS golf analyst Gary McCord are among nine players two strokes off the lead at minus-four.
Defending champion Nick Price managed a one-under 71 and is tied for 36th.
