SYDNEY – Australian sailing officials are surprised by a decision to replace windsurfing with kitesurfing at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The International Sailing Federation announced the decision after a meeting in Italy.
The future of both disciplines was being considered, but Australian officials expected a change in 2020. Sailing team high performance director Peter Conde tells Australian Associated Press on Sunday that "many people will be surprised at having windsurfing out and kitesurfing in as of 2016."
The international federation also confirmed a women's 49er skiff competition at the 2016 Games.
