Birmingham, England – Birmingham, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Americans Madison Keys, Alison Riske and Victoria Duval were a trio of first-round winners Monday at the Aegon Classic, a grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.
The 11th-seeded Keys cruised past Brazilian Teliana Pereira 6-3, 6-3, while the 15th-seeded Riske topped Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, and the qualifier Duval upended 13th-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-4 at Edgbaston Priory Club.
In other action involving seeds, No. 9 Chinese Zhang Shuai grounded Greek qualifier Eleni Daniilidou 7-5, 6-4 and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer ousted No. 11 Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 6-4.
Several other women reached the round of 32, including Americans Varvara Lepchenko, Lauren Davis and Coco Vandeweghe and former French Open champ Francesca Schiavone and her fellow Italian Camila Giorgi.
On Tuesday, top-seeded former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic will play a second- round match against German Mona Barthel.
Slovak Daniela Hantuchova beat Croat Donna Vekic in last year's Birmingham finale.
