IRVING, Texas – Josh Brent is playing football again because he doesn't want the teammate killed in a crash in which Brent was driving to "die in vain."
The Dallas defensive tackle spoke Wednesday in his first interview since his January conviction for intoxication manslaughter in the 2012 death of practice squad player Jerry Brown.
Brent said he misses Brown, his "best friend" and former Illinois teammate who joined the Cowboys not long before the drunken-driving crash in the Dallas suburb of Irving. Brown was a passenger in Brent's car.
The 26-year-old Brent was activated Tuesday following a 10-game suspension and can play Nov. 23 at the New York Giants. He last played on Dec. 2, 2012, six days before the crash.
