Warsaw, Poland – Italy central defender Giorgio Chiellini is set to miss Sunday's Euro 2012 quarterfinal against Italy due to a hamstring injury, it was announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Chiellini left Monday's match against Ireland, and the injury will sideline him for at least the next match.
"It is clear that he cannot play on Sunday but we will try to get him fit for the rest of the tournament hoping Italy go further," Italy team doctor Enrico Castellacci said in a statement.
Italy defeated Ireland, 2-0, to finish second behind Spain in Group C and make the knockout stage. England defeated Ukraine, 1-0, on Tuesday to win Group D.
The winner will reach the semifinals to play Germany or Greece on June 28, and Chiellini could be able to return should Italy advance.
