ST. LOUIS (Reuters) - Matt Holiday drove in three runs in support of Adam Wainwright's solid pitching to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
Holliday drove in a run with a double in the fifth inning before he blasted a two-run home run in the seventh to provide Wainwright with enough run support after he had engaged in a pitching battle with Oakland's Ben Sheets for the early innings.
Wainwright left after eight innings having allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts. He improved his record to 10-4 and is 7-0 at home this season.
Oakland, who had scored in the first inning when leadoff hitter Rajai Davis hit a double, stole third and came home on a throwing error by catcher Yadier Molina, rallied in the ninth scoring two runs before Jason Motte ended the threat.
