Hoffenheim midfielder Boris Vukcevic is in an artificial coma after sustaining life-threatening head injuries in a car accident Friday, the German club announced.

The 22-year-old Vukcevic was involved in a head-on collision and was airlifted to the hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and is in critical condition, according to the club.

"We are shocked by the news," sporting director Andreas Mueller said. "The team, the coach, everyone is shocked. Our thoughts are with his family."

Born in the former Yugoslavia, Vukcevic played for Germany at the Under-19 and U-21 levels. He debuted for Hoffenheim in 2008, and has made 55 appearances in the Bundesliga.
